درباره این کتاب:

طوطیماهیان، تقریبا در همه
صخرههای مرجانی دنیا یافت میشوند. این
همهگیر بودن و خاص بودن شیوهء تغذیه در
آنها، این ماهیان را به یکی از گروههای مهم
آبزیان نواحی آبسنگی تبدیل کرده است.
اما چرا دقیقا طوطیماهیان برای صخرههای
مرجانی مهم هستند؟ آیا تکامل خاص
آروارههایشان و عمل تغذیهء آنها چنین تاثیر
عمیقی بر سلامت صخرههای مرجانی جهان دارد؟
طوطیماهیان معمولا قطعات این صخرهها را
جویده و جلبکهای روی آنها را همراه کمی از
خود صخره میبلعند و با این شیوهء تغذیه از
تولیدکنندگان شن و ماسه هستند. دندانهای
آنها برای کنترل رشدشان باید با صخرهها
ساییده شوند.
در آبهای ایران نیز حدود 13 گونه طوطیماهی
فهرست شده است.
این کتاب خوانندگان را با این خانوادهء جذاب
ماهیان آشنا میکند: از ریختشناسی و
تغییرات تکاملی فک که آنرا برای جویدن
کربنات کلسیم جامد مناسب ساخته، تا تهدیداتی
